In the 14th week of a strike, the township of Black River-Matheson is effectively bargaining backwards with the 14 municipal workers who keep the roads safe, the arena operating, and the town running smoothly, says CUPE 1490.

Over 400 educational assistants, clerical staff, therapists and technicians employed by the Parkland School Division have voted overwhelmingly to join CUPE. In an Alberta Labour Relations Board vote counted today, employees voted 97.8% to leave their independent association and join Canada’s largest union. There was an 80% turnout.

The union representing more than 180 Lower Mainland transit supervisors remains committed to reaching a deal with Coast Mountain Bus Company at the bargaining table. CUPE condemns the Saskatchewan government’s attacks on constitutional rights to ram through anti-trans and anti-worker legislation. In August, Saskatchewan introduced legislation that would require education workers to inform parents when a student uses a different name or pronoun at school, putting queer and trans young people at risk of potential violence and isolation in their homes. Forcing education workers to out youth creates a hostile work environment for 2SLGBTQI+ staff and opens all workers up to potential discipline when they defy the policy, to protect vulnerable students.
