All CUPE National events (and most regional events) have an ombuds team on site who are trained to connect with members experiencing harassment or inappropriate behavior during the event.
The ombudsperson will listen and assist in finding a solution.
CUPE encourages members and staff to deal directly with the person they believe has violated the code of conduct and ask them to stop. Otherwise, they can bring a complaint to the ombudsperson. Together they will explore possible solutions to resolve the complaint and to get everyone safely through the event.
If the respondent does not willingly participate in a solution, the ombudsperson can bring the concern to the person in charge of the event. The person in charge has the authority to impose consequences, up to and including removal of a person from the event.
- Participants can reach the ombudsperson team by completing an intake form.
- A QR code is typically provided in event materials. There is also the option of sending a voicemail or text message to the ombuds phone.
CUPE’s ombuds program is managed by the Safer Union Spaces Office (SUSO). It is one process available to members to respond to behaviours that cause harm.
- SUSO supports other processes that can help address issues that may be ongoing or occur outside of the context of an event. The Safer Union Spaces Office will provide ongoing support for any complaints brought to the ombudsperson that require further action following the conclusion of an event.
