Migrant rights

CUPE stands with migrant workers, including our own members, and community allies. Together, we’re working for justice and organizing to end precarious living and working conditions. Our union supports the call for permanent resident status for all migrants. No worker in Canada should have to live in fear because of temporary status. Migrant rights are labour rights.

Status, not scapegoating for migrant workers

Immigration changes could force thousands of workers out of their jobs and out of the country this year. Migrant workers and international students are essential to our communities. They care for our children and elders, staff our hospitals and long-term care homes, and keep public services running.

Add your name to demand real solutions: permanent residency, renewed work permits, and an end to exploitative closed permits. Protecting migrant workers means protecting our schools, our hospitals, our long-term care, and our public services.

Collective agreement language to support members with temporary work permits

CUPE locals across the country represent members working under different temporary work permits. These permits include temporary foreign worker (TFW) permits, study permits and post-graduation work permits (PGWP).

This document is for CUPE bargaining teams and local executives. It will help you bargain strong collective agreements that meet the needs of members with temporary work permits.

CUPE members working with temporary immigration status: Know your rights

Are you a CUPE member working with temporary immigration status?

Are you an international student, on a temporary work permit, or waiting for your permanent residency application?

Do you have a temporary work permit that will expire soon?

Were you promised a path to permanent resident status that is no longer available?

CUPE fights every day for its members, including you.

Temporary foreign workers in our union: A solidarity and action guide

Temporary foreign workers in our union: A solidarity and action guide is designed to help CUPE bargaining teams and local executives support members who are TFWs at the bargaining table and in the workplace. It seeks to contribute to the broader fight for justice for migrant workers, and, by extension, all workers. This fight must take place in workplaces, in the government and on the streets. As trade unionists, we must continue building an anti-racist union and stand in solidarity with migrant workers.
