On Tuesday, the 50 blue-collar workers employed by the municipality of Montreal East voted unanimously in favour of resorting to pressure tactics on the employer—tactics that could include an unlimited general strike.

“The main issues that remain unresolved are wages, seniority, working conditions, schedules and outsourcing,” explained Jean-Pierre Lauzon, president of CUPE 301, the union representing Montreal’s blue-collar workers.

The collective agreement expired on December 31, 2022. The parties have been at the bargaining table since December 2024 due to a year-long mediation on working conditions.

“Talks are ongoing, but we hope to apply a little pressure on the employer to negotiate a good contract for our members,” said Lauzon.
