Earlier today, Justin Trudeau announced today that he will step down as prime minister and leader of the Liberal Party of Canada. Trudeau has also prorogued Parliament until March 24 while the Liberal Party carries out a new leadership selection process. We thank Mr. Trudeau for his service to Canada and wish him and his family the best.

There is no question that Canada needs new leadership and, after a decade in power, the Liberals have not earned another chance, no matter who is leading them. The time for a change in government has come. But we need more than just change for the sake of change – we need a government that will move us forward with purpose, fairness, and a commitment to justice for all. The time has come for a shift that truly prioritizes the well-being of Canadians.

It would be a mistake to think any change at all will be positive for working families in Canada. In fact, the danger of a Conservative government under Pierre Poilievre cannot be overstated. The damage to Canada’s public services and social safety net would be catastrophic. All the progress Canada has made on strengthening our public health care system, workers’ rights, and climate action would be undone.

This moment calls for meaningful progress. Instead of undoing the strides we’ve made – such as the national child care program, the emerging federal anti-scab legislation, and the beginnings of dental and pharmacare – we need a government that will continue to build on these vital achievements. We need leadership that works for workers and ensures that the progress we’ve fought for not only endures but expands for the benefit of all Canadians. The Liberals have had their chance. The Conservatives will only make a bad situation much, much worse. Now is the time for a government led by Jagmeet Singh and the NDP, the only true party for workers in Canada.
