CUPE members and their allies rallied July 15 in support of 30 CUPE members at Yorktown Shelter for Abused Women in central Toronto who have now been on strike since June 14.

The main issue in the dispute is worker safety on the overnight shift. The agency wants to force employees to work alone. The members of CUPE 3878 are fighting this on the grounds that its a health and safety risk, citing many examples of workers being killed or injured while working alone in similar situations.

Formerly known as Shirley Samaroo House, the shelter has served the community in the old City of York for many years, particularly members of the visible minority and immigrant communities.

Local 3878 say theyre fighting for the future of the service and the safety of both workers and clients. Theyve started wearing bright purple and yellow t-shirts on the picket line which say, Womens Safety On the Line!

The local is short of funds and needs additional resources to sustain the strike. Donations and messages of solidarity can be sent to CUPE Local 3878 Strike Fund c/o Carmen Henry, Ontario Regional Office, 305 Milner Road, Suite 901, Scarborough, ON M1B 3V4.
