Rebuilding our safety net: Let’s make Employment Insurance work for workers

CUPE members know the problems baked into Canada’s Employment Insurance (EI) system. Whether accessing EI while on parental leave, after a layoff or in the event of a work interruption due to a natural disaster, the time has come for the federal government to improve EI so it provides all the support workers need.

Feds must move forward with EI Board of Appeals that includes workers

The federal government must keep its word to reinstitute an Employment Insurance (EI) Board of Appeals that includes worker representatives. Workers help fund our EI system and workers must play a central role in how the money is allocated and how claims are administered.

Employment Insurance

CUPE is calling on the federal government to expand access to Employment Insurance and increase supports for unemployed and sick workers. For decades, EI has excluded many workers and paid benefits that are too low to survive on. It’s time to rebuild this essential part of Canada’s social safety net.
