MISSISSAUGA, Ont. – A delegation from CUPE 966, representing workers at Region of Peel long-term care centres, will take their case for pay equity to the region’s general committee meeting tomorrow, May 6. The meeting begins at 9:30 a.m. at Region of Peel Headquarters, 10 Peel Centre Drive, Brampton.
“We want to make sure that our elected representatives in Peel understand exactly what is happening to the women who care for residents in our long-term care centres,” said CUPE 966 President Mary Jo Falle, who will make the deputation. She will be joined by Vice-President Audrey Nichols and CUPE National Job Evaluation Representative Tom Baker.
While senior management in Peel says that both parties are waiting for a decision from the provincial Pay Equity Commission, the pay equity issues could be settled tomorrow, said Falle.
“There is nothing to prevent the region from sitting down with us and working it out right now,” she said. “We’re ready to meet and figure out how these women are going to get the money that’s owing to them since 2003 and how to make sure the staff in our newest long-term care centres are also included in the region’s pay equity plan.”
Paying different wages to people who are doing the same job flies in the face of the principles of pay equity, Falle said.
“It’s not like the region has a choice on this matter,” she noted. “It’s the law.”
