Delegates at CUPE's founding conventionCUPE came into existence at its founding convention in Winnipeg on September 24, 1963. CUPE was created out of a merger of two large public sector unions following negotiations that took close to six years. The new union represented approximately 78,000 workers.

Today, our membership is far larger, we are much better organized, and we are more diversified than when we started out. We have grown much stronger, 715,000 members strong.

As we celebrate our 60th anniversary, let’s remember all the members who helped build our great union.

We invite you to visit our 60th anniversary webpage.

These archives cover important moments in our history. We must be proud of what we have accomplished while recognizing that much still remains to be done.
