Robert Chisholm, a former CUPE education rep, is ready to form the first NDP government in the history of Nova Scotia whenever he is called upon to do so.
Chisholm, who is now the Leader of the Opposition, told a meeting of CUPE staff people in Halifax that there is a good chance over the next six months that the NDP will be asked to form a government without another election being called.
The NDP and the governing Liberals each won 19 seats in the March 24 provincial election while the Conservatives won the remaining 14 seats. The legislature is scheduled to meet May 21 and the Liberals are hoping to hold onto power by forming a loose alliance with the Conservatives.
Chisholm told the meeting that the alliance may not hold and the Lieutenant-Governor of the province could ask the NDP to form a government.
