SLS - Growing our mobilizing power
May 4 (3:00pm) - 8, 2026 (12:00pm)

Stewards can play a key role when the union needs to mobilize our members – whether it’s to support the bargaining committee, or stop the employer’s attempt to contract out our work. Learn basic mobilization theory and explore how stewards can tackle workplace problems in ways that engage more members and build the union’s power.

Time and time again, members list workplace violence as a key challenge at work. With care and respect, we will: - examine types and sources of violence; - develop strategies and plans for holding employers to their obligation to provide a health and safe workplace; - examine what governments can do about it; - work with resources and supports for members who face violence; - generate and work on ideas for strengthening solidarity and getting members involved in the workplace, to fight workplace violence.

HS - Basics of Incident Investigations

SLS - Growing our mobilizing power

Learn basic mobilization theory and explore how stewards can tackle workplace problems in ways that engage more members and build the union’s power.

We are in a time of harsh political debates that can leave members feeling misunderstood, divided, and reluctant to discuss politics, human rights, and core values of our union. This is no accident, it is by design. The ultra rich want to reshape the world against the interests of workers and anyone fighting oppression. We will examine the sources of this division or polarization, build strategies for bringing members together, practice having tough conversations, and develop plans to build unity and win for workers.

Navigating Conflict
May 4 (3:00pm) - 8, 2026 (12:00pm)

Conflict is a part of our lives – at work, in the union, and at home. In this workshop we’ll build our conflict skills by looking at: • How our beliefs about conflict and our conflict style affect what happens in a conflict. • Sources of conflict in the union and at work. • Conflict dynamics, cultural differences and power • Choosing the best response in a conflict. • Conflict communication skills and difficult conversations

SLS - Popular economics for stewards
May 4 (3:00pm) - 8, 2026 (12:00pm)

We keep hearing that the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. How do these trends impact our lives as workers and union members? What is needed from us as stewards in these times of growing economic inequality?

We will build skills to represent, advocate for, and support members with everything from representing members to mental health. This stream will include the latest case law, with a focus on Essential Services, a new challenge in Manitoba to union members’ right to strike. We will work with scenarios, practice having tough conversations, and look for deeper, more collective and creative approaches to winning for members. Introduction to Stewarding is a pre-requisite.

In response to the health concerns of our members and staff, CUPE has implemented a Scent-Free Policy at all of our workshops. Scented products such as hair spray, perfume and deodorant can trigger reactions such as respiratory distress and headaches. Facilitators and participants are asked to refrain from using scented products while attending our workshops and meetings. Thank you for your cooperation.
