At a general meeting on June 8, members of the union representing Hydro-Québec’s worksite nurses (SIICHQ) unanimously rejected the employer’s offer submitted last week. They are thus preparing for a three-day strike June 19-21. As a result, this strike could shut down major worksites.

“Even though the parties agreed on most non-monetary clauses, some major issues remain. The offer falls short of the members’ demands, and even worse, it scales back their working conditions,” explained Isabelle Doyon, a CUPE representative.

The worksite nurses are attempting to obtain their first collective agreement. However, they are dealing with an employer that does not want to recognize the specific and unique role they play, which is dictated by the First-aid Minimum Standards Regulation.

“Despite the circumstances and the announcement of strike action, the SIICHQ is still willing to pursue negotiations with Hydro-Québec,” added Doyon.

The union will not be giving any interviews, as all of its energy will be dedicated to the ongoing negotiations.

The SIICHQ, in cooperation with CUPE, has launched a campaign that explains and celebrates the little-known role of these indispensable workers.
