SUDBURY, ON - The union representing 450 outside and 800 inside workers in the city of Greater Sudbury exchanged proposals last week with management, starting the process of negotiating a new collective agreement on behalf of local municipal workers. Their current collective agreement expires March 31st, 2005.

We look forward to negotiating a fair contract with the City on behalf of our members, said Wyman MacKinnon, president of Local 4705 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE). We will do our best to achieve a contract settlement without a labour dispute and we hope the City will come to the bargaining table with respect and recognition for the important work our members carry out on a daily basis, making Greater Sudbury a great place to live, work and do business.

Municipal workers provide a wide range of public services in the city of Greater Sudbury, including transit, paramedic and ambulance services, parks, operations, sewer and water, arenas, office, clerical, technical and library services.

CUPE is Canadas largest union, representing over 540,000 women and men, working to build strong communities and improve the quality of life for Canadians in municipalities, schools, universities, colleges, libraries, hospitals and clinics, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), international agencies, nursing and retirement homes, parks, health care, child care, social services, and many other services across Canada.
