Vancouver -Support staff at Simon Fraser University have joined those at UBC and the University of Victoria in giving their bargaining committee a strong mandate to take strike action in the new year, should that become necessary.

Local 3338, Simon Fraser University Support Staff voted 78% in favour of using strike action as a final resort.

Negotiations have been difficult with little movement in the area of pay equity, a particularly important issue for SFU. But benefits and job security are also important issues for both SFU and the entire sector.

UBC, SFU, UVIC and the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) have been involved in joint public actions since September l999, in attempts to resolve issues that are common to all universities.

Bargaining is set to resume January 6 and 7, 2000.
