Toronto - Over the past year, Ontario residents have shown a commitment to keeping Ontario’s electricity system public. Many Ontario residents have joined with the Ontario Electricity Coalition (OEC), a province-wide pro-public power group in telling the province, that deregulation and privatization of hydro would be a dismal failure, causing hardship and serious damage to many individuals, farms, businesses and local utilities.

“But the worst is yet to come, because price caps and rebates are not long-term solutions to a stable and reliable hydro system. Full public control and an end to privatization and deregulation are the solution,” says Paul Kahnert a spokesperson with OEC.

Once again the OEC is encouraging Ryerson students, faculty and staff to speak out and help save public power. The OEC will be holding a ’Save Public Power’ meeting on Saturday, January 11, 2003 starting at 9:30 a.m. at Ryerson University, 350 Victoria St., Room A711, Jorgenson Hall.

“The OEC will announce a three-point plan aimed at restoring and renewing public power,” says Kahnert who will be speaking at the Ryerson meeting.
