WINDSOR, Ont. – On Friday, May 29th, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice ruled that Windsor striking workers were allowed to stop people from entering six specific city sites for a period of no longer than 5 minutes.

Jim Wood, president of CUPE local 82, representing the City outside workers, sees this as a fair compromise and says his members will respect the court ruling until this strike is over. “We will obey the rules and, starting Thursday of this week, we will ask the citizens to respect our picket lines for five minutes when bringing their garbage or recyclables at any of the two public drop off depots”, said Wood. “Instead of being on the picket line, we would of course prefer to be back at work, but Mayor Francis has made it clear that he would not let his bargaining team get back to the table. Furthermore, he stills refuses to consider arbitration as a solution to end the dispute”.

Jean Fox, president of CUPE local 543, representing inside workers, also confirmed that her members were going to respect the injunction. “We are also part of this community and we realize the work stoppage has created some major inconvenient situations for the residents of Windsor”, said Fox. “Our hope is that this will also be an opportunity for citizens to discuss with the members and inquire about the issues we are fighting for”.
