This past year Newfoundlanders elected their richest citizen to be the new premier. His name is Danny Williams, but he is more popularly known as Danny Millions, because of the wealth he acquired while running a broadcasting company. Williams is the first Conservative to lead the province in over 15 years, but he insists hes a Red Tory (clearly one of the last) and has expressed skepticism about public-private partnerships. However, he has promised to run the province more like a business, so CUPE members are keeping a watchful eye during the governments honeymoon period. Also, the governments contracts with public sector workers are set to expire March 31, and so far Williams is not sounding conciliatory. He has mused about cutting 25 per cent of the provinces labour force through attrition and the new finance minister has told CUPE to lower its expectations.
