West Nipissing, Ont., municipal workers (CUPE Local 535) voted Aug. 2 to accept tentative agreements, averting a strike in municipal and utility services.

We are happy that we were able to reach these agreements without taking strike action, CUPE national representative Monique Drapeau said. We achieved our negotiation objectives and, most importantly, we were able to protect our communitys public services against contracting out.

The agreements cover 67 workers of the municipality of West Nipissing, West Nipissing Environmental Services and West Nipissing Energy Services and Public Utilities Ltd.

We are pleased that municipal services in West Nipissing, including hydro, water, garbage and all inside and outside municipal services, will continue to be delivered by dedicated, public workers, Drapeau said.
