Over 500 employees of the Region of Peel, Ontario Works unit of CUPE Local 966 have been on the picket line since May 3, fighting concessions and inequality in the workplace. Non-union and management have received 2 per cent raises and performance bonuses of up to 7.5 per cent.

Spirits on the line are good and the local had a marvelous turnout at a rally held during the second week of the strike. Members of many CUPE locals, and other unions in the Region lent their support and speakers included Fred Hahn, president of CUPE Ontario, and Sid Ryan, president of the OFL.

CUPE Local 966 is facing an extremely hard-line employer who is demanding concessions and increased part time work. The Public Works and Transhelp units of CUPE Local 966 have filed for “no boards” with the Ontario Ministry of Labour.
