CUPE locals in Vancouver are urging their members to vote to elect city councillors by ward in an upcoming referendum.

The presidents of CUPE 15, CUPE 1004, CUPE 391 representing the city’s municipal, education, community and library workers sent a letter out to all members this week asking them to vote to change the system of electing city councillors at-large to a system of electing councillors by wards.

“This will ensure that each neighbourhood based constituency will have a representative from that community on city council,” the letter said. “With a ward system the decision makers at council will be more accessible to those who elect them, including to CUPE members who are a vital part of each neighbourhood.”
