The union representing 2,400 workers at the University of Saskatchewan and University of Regina is conducting a round of membership meetings after recent contract talks failed to achieve a breakthrough on several contentious issues.

Members of CUPE 1975 and 1975-01 (Regina) have been without a contract since December 31, 2006.

Since contract negotiations began in March, progress has been made on several priority issues. But talks have hit an impasse over issues involving seniority rights, sick leave benefits, earned days off and bidding rights for casual employees.

The union will use the membership meetings, which begin next week, to get feedback about ways to expedite contract negotiations before returning to the bargaining table on October 2.
