(Toronto) 005400680065 union representing 1,500 employees of Toronto Hydro will hold a news conference tomorrow, Friday, November 19 at 1:00 p.m.

CUPE Local One will be reacting to today’s announcement that Toronto Mayor Mel Lastman plans to sell the public utility.

The union will present information that shows such a move would not be of financial benefit to Toronto taxpayers.

The City of Edmonton was recently faced with a similar decision, and councillors there voted not to sell Edmonton Power Corporation. Material related to the Edmonton decision will be made available.

Toronto Hydro currently brings in at least $85 million to City coffers annually. Experience in other jurisdictions in Canada and around the world where privatization has occurred, shows that consumers end up footing the bill through inevitable electricity rate increases.

(ASSIGNMENT EDITORS: The news conference will be held at the Delta Chelsea Hotel, 33 Gerrard St. W., in the Wren Room, 3rd Floor, at 1:00 p.m.)
