As the association representing faculty and librarians at the University of Toronto prepares to negotiate a new collective agreement, it faces the possibility of a strike by its own staff in December.

CUPE 1281, representing two staff members at the University of Toronto Faculty Association (UTFA), will be in a legal strike or lockout position on December 18.

It is ironic that the faculty association is playing hardball with its own staff at the same time as it plans to negotiate improvements from the university,” said CUPE National Representative Jim Morrison.

UTFA is demanding concessions on wages that will have a direct effect on pension contributions and entitlements, he said.

It’s hard to understand when the UTFA president’s stipend has increased 40% and the treasurer’s has soared up 130%,” Morrison said.
