ROUYN-NORANDA, QC  - Quebec Hydro employees, members of CUPE, are mourning the loss of a member in Rouyn-Noranda on Friday, October 13, 2006. The deceased, a 28-year old CUPE member and another contractor, died while working on one of the turbines.

The union is working rapidly to ensure an enquiry into the tragedy. ”We’ll be moving quickly to shed light on the cause of this tragedy.” said Luc Legault, secretary general of CUPE Local 957.  He reminded people that two other workers lost their lives in this region in 2003. CUPE is also represented in ten other sectors in Quebec including  health, social services, education, municipal and other public utilites and crown corporations in urban transportation, airlines and communications. There are close to 100,000 CUPE members in Quebec.
