Put under trusteeship by the Commission municipale du Québec from March 2023 to October 2025, the municipal township of Godmanchester, Quebec has been experiencing a particularly tumultuous period. The work climate among municipal council members and employees has generally been described as difficult and worrisome for several months now.
Township employees opted to join CUPE at the end of 2024, a move that reflects a growing need for protection and representation. Begun in May 2025, the bargaining of their first-ever collective agreement marked an important step in the reorganization of labour relations. However, these discussions are currently at a standstill due to the absence of the employer spokesperson.
Although the trusteeship has now been lifted, major issues in the work environment are ongoing. CUPE feels it is imperative to re-establish a healthy and safe work environment for all employees, strengthen local governance and ensure a smooth transition to fully autonomous governance. The next few months will be crucial for ensuring staff well-being and the stability of the town’s administration.
Out of respect for the current municipal elections, CUPE will not be issuing any additional comments until further notice.
