CUPE 1, which represents 1,500 Toronto Hydro workers, has launched a major campaign to fight the possible privatization of Canada’s largest municipal utility.

Toronto Mayor Mel Lastman has talked openly of selling the public utility. As part of its campaign, Local One will work to make sure any such sell-off will be a major issue in the upcoming municipal elections, set for November of this year.

The Harris Government’s Bill 35 has opened the door to these privatization scams. Says Local One president Bruno Silano, “The only thing this bill does is protect large commercial and industrial customers and private power companies, while driving up the rates of residential and small business customers.”
