Temporary Servicing Representative, Yarmouth Area Office

The Canadian Union of Public Employees is inviting qualified and motivated individuals to apply for the temporary position of Servicing Representative to work out of the Yarmouth Area Office, located in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. GENERAL FUNCTION

The Servicing Representative represents the interests of CUPE members by providing a wide range of labour relations services, developing the capacity of our members and locals, and implementing the Union’s policies and programs.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES

Under the direction of the Regional Director, the successful applicant will be required to perform some or all the following functions:

  • Work to implement all policies and programs approved by the National Convention, National Officers, and National Executive Board.
  • Organize groups of unorganized workers within CUPE’s jurisdiction.
  • Assist local executives in establishing and maintaining an effective union administration, guided by the CUPE Constitution, and complying with national policies.
  • Advise and assist local unions in interpreting, administering, and enforcing contract language and grievances.
  • Advise, assist, and guide local unions in preparing contract demands and leading negotiations.
  • Encourage jurisdictional coalitions and coordinate joint bargaining within a jurisdictional group on a provincial or regional basis.
  • Research, prepare, and present briefs to various boards, as required.
  • Assist and guide local unions in preparing for and conducting strikes, demonstrations, and other labour or political protests.
  • Educate, promote, advise, and assist local unions in collaboration with other CUPE specialists when needed, on issues pertaining to equity, human rights, and anti-oppression, including anti-racism and anti-discrimination, under human rights law and anti-harassment practices and frameworks.
  • Actively engage and support locals to achieve a membership which is representative of all equity-deserving groups.
  • Coordinate organizational resources from different departments to ensure professional and technical assistance to the membership.
  • Be familiar with and assist local unions in understanding and interpreting current labour legislation and policies and react appropriately to proposed or legislated changes.
  • Promote local union affiliation to provincial and regional labour bodies in accordance with CUPE policy and participate in related activities.
  • Participate and encourage local union involvement at all political levels to further the interests of organized labour.
  • Assume and effectively perform all executive responsibilities, in compliance with CUPE policy, on behalf of a local union placed under administration.
  • Work on national/provincial CUPE campaigns, as assigned.
  • Use available technology and tools to maintain information or work with others on various projects. 
  • Complete all related administrative tasks, including but not limited to, drafting letters, processing expenses, completing reports, drafting emails, participating in conference calls, attending all required meetings.
  • Perform other related duties, as assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS

  • Community College graduate in a relevant field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Active involvement in the labour movement.
  • Recent experience within the past five years as a union representative or a person who represented workers.
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • General knowledge of:
    • CUPE political and organizational structure;
    • CUPE’s Strategic Directions and Bargaining Policy;
    • CUPE’s Anti-Racism Strategy;
    • Provincial and Federal Human Rights Codes/Acts

    • Use MS Office Suite, Internet search engines, and where required statistical, database or HR management applications, and learn new software.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT as set out in the collective agreement between CUPE and the Canadian Staff Union.

WEEKLY SALARY: $2,635.33
