Qualified individuals are invited to submit their application for the temporary position of Senior Officer to work in the Union Education Branch at the National Office of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, located in Ottawa, Ontario. This assignment will begin immediately and is expected to continue until August 1, 2025.

GENERAL FUNCTION

Under the direction of the Union Education Branch Director, the successful applicant will be responsible for the creation, development, presentation and writing of various types of education materials and programs, designed to educate CUPE leaders, members and staff and to develop the skills and capacity necessary for effective union action.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES

  • Research, create, and write original in-person and online adult education workshop and conference material, on a wide range of issues/subjects related to current and continuous union and member education needs.
  • Apply current adult education and popular education theory and techniques in developing and delivering workshops and conference materials.
  • Develop and design accessible and thorough facilitation guides for workshops offered through CUPE’s education program.
  • Revise and update existing CUPE education material and workshops.
  • Facilitate in-person and online educational sessions, as required, and teach others facilitation skills.
  • Create, prepare and write material to promote CUPE’s education program.
  • Develop, write and facilitate weekend and weeklong workshops on various issues/subjects for a wide range of audiences within CUPE.
  • Collaborate with CUPE leaders, members and staff in other branches and departments to develop educational materials.

QUALIFICATIONS

The successful applicant must have extensive union experience, union education experience, a commitment and understanding of the objectives and principles of the labour movement in general, and of CUPE in particular.

The position requires:

  • A university degree in arts or social science (with specialization in adult education preferred), or equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the application of current adult education and popular education theory and techniques to union education.
  • The ability to develop and write innovative and clear education modules and workshops quickly.
  • Knowledge, understanding, and experience of issues impacting Indigenous, Black, and racialized, people in the union, workplace, and the community.
  • An extensive knowledge and understanding of current union issues including all matters related to the collective bargaining process, as well as a good understanding of political, social and economic matters facing union members.
  • The skills and experience required to develop and deliver anti-oppression and anti-racism training.
  • High level facilitation skills and experience, including strategic planning skills and experience.
  • An ability to work and communicate effectively using various educational media.
  • Initiative and the ability to perform high quality work without close day-to-day supervision.
  • Strong strategic, time management, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work well on a team.
  • High level of comfort using Microsoft Office software, including Word and Outlook, as well as internet browsers and online document management systems.
  • Above average oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Free to travel and work weekends and holidays as required.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT as set out in the collective agreement between CUPE and the CSU National Office Component.

WEEKLY SALARY: $2,635.33
