Toronto John Weatherup, President of Local 4400 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), representing 13,000 education workers at the Toronto District School Board, issued the following statement at 4:30 p.m., March 23rd:
I am here today to report that negotiations with the Toronto District School Board have not been going well. What the Board is proposing is a very public slap in the face to our members, and we dont deserve it. The increase of 8% the Board recently offered teachers would generate a raise only half as big for our members because on average they earn half as much. Our members are very upset and if there is a strike it will be a very bitter one.
That is why our negotiating committee has decided to extend the strike deadline for one more week, to give the Board time to reconsider its position and come to its senses. The new strike deadline is 12:01 a.m., Saturday, March 31st.
We could have extended the deadline one day at a time, but we felt that wouldnt be fair to parents.
We have asked our members to work to rule for the next week, and to not do anything to help the employer prepare for a strike or perform any extra duties.
This coming Wednesday, March 28 at 5:30 p.m. we will hold a mass rally at the Board, 155 College Street, to demand a fair settlement.
