After a long public campaign to stop the privatization of maintenance services at the St. Catharines new sports arena, members of CUPE Local 150 will now provide maintenance services at the Sportsplex, after City Council ratified an agreement reached between management and the union. This is a victory for public services in St. Catharines, said Sean Soper, spokesperson for Local 150. Our battle to save our jobs would not have been possible without the strong support from residents and other CUPE area locals. This campaign shows the power of mobilization and solidarity. Following a strong public response to CUPEs campaign, Council instructed management to sit down with CUPE to negotiate an internal solution, which led to an agreement that ensures CUPE members will perform the work.
