Day care workers at Progress Child Care Centre, members of CUPE Local 2484, have been on strike since May 4 when they voted 15-2 against a proposed settlement.

The board had told the workers that if they were to strike, the board would exhaust the centres contingency fund paying salaried staff and then declare bankruptcy with a view to closing the centre. These workers earn, on average, $9.50 an hour. The provincial average is $13.50 per hour. This day care centres board is unique in that it has only one parent member on its management board. Day care centres ordinarily have parents who use the service as board members.

NOTE: Members of the day care centre staff and clientele will be available for comment. Among them are speakers of French as well as Tagalog, Tamil, Spanish, Polish and Cantonese.
