VANCOUVER – Simon Fraser University called its support staff to the Labour Relations Board today, only to reject a proposal by its CUPE support staff (Local 3338) to continue bargaining with the support of a mediator arbitrator before walking away from the table.

“The arrogance and mean-spiritedness of our employer in perpetrating this blatant

unfairness is over the top,” said John Bannister, business agent for CUPE local 3338.

SFU’s Board of Governors meets Thursday and the contentious issues of tuition increases and negotiations are expected to take considerable time on the agenda.

SFU has offered wage and benefit increases across the board to other employee groups as well as improved working conditions. “The degree of anger and disappointment among our members is getting more difficult to contain,” said Bannister. “We have worked very hard to bring about pressure with minimal effect on the students, but it is clear that this employer will do nothing until there is a full shut-down of the campus. That is now very close.” said Bannister.

Beginning tomorrow all services at SFU and Harbour Centre will be behind pickets.
