Skilled trades people at the Avalon East School Board in St. Johns, Newfoundland are returning to work after months of campaigning against layoffs.

CUPE 1560 President Wayne Lucas says not even letters of support from federal and provincial politicians could sway the School Board members to reinstate the nine jobs. What finally worked, he says, was the laid-off workers plan to follow the contract workers around all summer.

Persistence pays off, says Lucas, We had to make a few concessions, but well be going back to a raise and reduced summer hours.
