PEEL CUPE Local 2842, representing employees of the Community Care Access Centre Staff of Peel Region, has ratified the tentative agreement reached with the Peel CCAC on July 18. This agreement was a long time coming, but the members were successful in achieving their major goals, says Paul Jordison, a national representative of CUPE.
The strike lasted eight weeks (minus one day to be precise) and all the members of the l Local are very happy with the results.
We achieved a wage increase of three per cent a year for each year starting in April, 2000. We also achieved both weekend and evening premium increases and vacation improvements for members as well as signing bonuses of $500 for full-time employees and $300 for part-time.
In the area of benefits, we defeated U.S. style managed care with its preferred providers and preauthorization and exclusion of drugs and medicines. Existing hours of work protection has been maintained and major new protections are now provided for both full and part time staff, Jordison concluded.
