Campbell Liberals force closure of 101-year-old facility this Friday
To protest Campbell’s Liberal government’s closure of the 101-year-old Summerland Hospital, area residents and health care workers will stage a candlelight vigil Thursday night, then hunker down for a “sleep-over” in front of the hospital. They are fighting mad that Victoria has decided this hospital, which has been part of their community for over a century, will close forever Friday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
At the candlelight vigil, organized by the Hospital Employees’ Union, the people of Summerland will tell Campbell what they think about this cut that will leave them with no access to hospital care in their own community. “This is just another broken Liberal election promise,” says HEU secretary-business manager Chris Allnutt. “How is this providing the people of Summerland with health care when and where they need it?”
Members of the community are invited to join in both the candlelight vigil and “pajama party.” Those that wish to stay overnight should bring their tents, sleeping bags, warm clothing and snacks.
And they’ll be there tomorrow when the Liberal government officially breaks its promise and closes the century-old hospital
