Blue collar workers in the City of Verdun, Quebec set up picket lines in front of the municipal garage on October 1, after conciliation efforts broke down. The workers are members of CUPE Local 302.

“Since the mayor unilaterally launched his strategic plan in 1995, we’ve negotiated without results,” said National representative Serge Pilote.

The most contentious elements of the plan entail the re-organization of work and assignments, including contracting out.

Citing mounting harassment and provocations by management, Pilote said “the members are convinced that the only way to make the City understand and to ensure respect is through strike action.”
