CUPE Local 1338-2, representing commercial waste collection workers serving 3000 commercial waste customers in the Ottawa area, reached an agreement in principle with BFI late last night.

We have an agreement in principle that will be hammered out over the weekend and it still needs to be ratified by our members, says Ernie Dion, president of Local 1338-2 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE). We were able to get the employer to back away from concessions that would have poisoned the workplace.

The threat of a strike was based on BFIs insistence that new employees would not be covered by the same contract as existing workers. BFI has now backed away from that position.
