Building Membership Strength

Theres lots of action going on to build a stronger union across the country with leadership training with Ontario and Saskatchewan health care workers, work on strengthening the local union with Vancouver municipal workers and training for mobilizing members in Manitoba in all sectors. In Halifax in September, members from across Nova Scotia gathered to take place in a mobilization workshop. Called Mobilizing to Win, the workshop was a chance for members and staff to discuss ways of getting more members involved in two campaigns the Halifax Harbour clean-up campaign and the Save our Services (SOS) campaign to protect public services in the province. A highlight of the workshop was a panel on lessons learned from local campaign success stories. Participants also enjoyed an excellent theatre presentation on the Halifax harbour clean-up. Put on by a Halifax-based group called Iron Dale, the presentation was an example of how we can use theatre to get our message out to our members and the general public. Participants left the workshop with campaign plans and ideas about how to get more members interested and active in their locals.

In Ontario, we provided special training for the 21 members who would be taking the Medicare Exhibit across the province. The two-day session included public speaking, media training, practical training on putting up the exhibit, and practise sessions on how to present our health care messages to the general public.

In addition, we have four new workshops being offered across the country: Collective Bargaining, Up with Womens Wages, Political Action and Harassment Awareness.
