TorontoSid Ryan the Ontario president of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) will be speaking to York Region municipal workers, members of the newly merged Local 905 of CUPE, today (Wednesday, January 17) at 6:00p.m., at the Legion Hall, 105 Industrial Parkway North, in Aurora. (The media is welcome to attend the meeting).

If a new municipal act is passed by the Tory government this spring, municipalities will be facing increasing pressure to provide cheaper and cheaper municipal services. Despite municipal workers doing their best on the job, the quality of services will suffer as municipalities scramble to meet the new provincial guidelines that will be tied to funding.

The CUPE members in York Region have been very prudent in merging into a large local prior to the new legislation being introduced, said CUPE Ontario president Sid Ryan.
