The union representing staff at Glen Stor Dun Lodge in Cornwall, are celebrating after reaching an agreement with the employer that ensures the highest quality of care for the residents. Members of CUPE 1792 met with the management of the lodge last week to iron out a deal ensuring fair and accurate scheduling at the municipally run care facility.
These negotiations came about after union members held multiple rallies and information pickets at city hall, supported by other members of the labour community and local community supporters.
“We are grateful for the support we received from our community that helped ensure an amicable resolution to this issue,” said Aileen Raven, president of CUPE 1792. “While our fight for our residents is over, we know other long term care facilities are facing similar challenges. We will continue to support our sister, CUPE 3251, as well as other unions in their fights.”
Members of CUPE 3251 serve Cornwall residents by safeguarding the city’s water, running recreation programs, working in housing and more. Days before bargaining was set to begin, the city delivered layoff notices to 14 workers with no explanation – cuts that would harm services and make Cornwall a less equitable and accessible place to live. Members continue to organize and solicit community support for the kinds of investments that residents need. Members held a strike vote with 90% voting in favour of job action if they are unable to secure a fair deal.
