Petition body
Dear Member, I am deeply concerned with the threats to my civil liberties and democratic freedoms posed by Bill C-51, the Anti-Terrorism Act. I am also concerned with the way Bill C-51 is being rushed through Parliament with very limited debate. The changes to the Criminal Code, powers of law enforcement, rights of due process, rights of free speech, privacy protections and the expansion of the government’s intelligence gathering powers encompassed in this legislation must be openly and publicly debated – by Members of Parliament and by all Canadians. Laws proposed in Bill C-51 that try to silence legitimate voices of protest by playing on fear and intimidation, have no place in a free and democratic society. As a Member of Parliament, you have a duty and responsibility to help build a Canada that is safer and stronger: that means working to unite all the people of Canada, rather than trying to pit us against each other. I urge you to vote against the divisive and abusive Bill C-51, and commit to only backing legislation that genuinely improves the public health and safety of all Canadians.
