City of Toronto works back to work
with tentative settlement
About 20,000 City of Toronto inside workers started going back to work
this afternoon (April 10) after their union, CUPE local 79 and management
reached a tentative agreement just after midnight, April 10th.
The union held a news conference at 10am in a Toronto hotel to announce
the agreement which includes significant progress on issues such as wage
harmonization, job security as well pay equity.
The new agreement merges 24 agreements made between the union and the
former cities and boroughs of the new Toronto ‘megacity’.
“We made gains because our members felt strongly enough to go out on
strike,” said Anne Dubas, CUPE Local 79’s president. “Of course, we didnt
achieve everything we wanted but considering we were faced with
consolidating 24 agreements, we have achieved a lot.”
Members of Local 79 will vote on the tentative agreement this week. The
strike began Mar. 31, 2000.
“We did well. We have an excellent collective agreement,” Dubas said.
“We have a foundation to build on. We are stronger than ever.”
