CUPE has played an important role in restoring a three per cent rollback imposed in 1994 on all Nova Scotia public sector workers earning more than $25,000 a year.
Restoration of the three per cent cut was part of a major settlement won by more than 3,000 CUPE hospital employees in March, and also by provincial nurses. CUPE was also part of a court challenge that had been underway to restore the rollback for all public sector employees.
On April 8, the Nova Scotia government announced that it was abandoning all further attempts through the courts to prevent it from restoring the 3% rollback for everyone.
Officially, the decision applies only to Nova Scotia Government Employees Union members at the QEII Health Sciences Centre in Halifax. But Human Resources Minister Wayne Gaudet said he expects all employers to fall into line.
The total cost to the province will be an extra $2.2 million in back pay.
