Human Rights Days
February 23 (1:30pm) - 26, 2025 (11:00am) (8 spaces available)

Here is another opportunity to learn more about our world, and the world of human rights. This workshop will include perspectives beyond our backyards, starting with CUPE’s new ARC 101 (“Anti-Racism CUPE”) workshop, and the pilot of a new workshop that looks to understand Anti-Black Racism, and give unionists tools to defeat it. Discussion of our union work within a global context (“Global People Power!”) will follow. Please join us to take your next steps for equality and human rights within our locals and our communities.  ARC 101  Anti-Black Racism  Global People Power

Fundamentals of Labour Law
February 23 (1:30pm) - 26, 2025 (11:00am) (7 spaces available)

In this workshop, participants will learn the fundamentals of labour law as they apply to unionized workplaces in Saskatchewan. Topics will include what locals and activists need to know about The Saskatchewan Employment Act, the union and employer’s duty to accommodate, and the duty of fair representation. Law, case decisions, and other jurisprudence will be discussed and reviewed, so participants can begin to understand more deeply their roles in the union legal framework and landscape. Pre-requisite: Introduction to Stewarding.

Enjoy (re-)discovering CUPE’s renowned Steward Learning Series. These workshops are for newly-elected union stewards and offices (and for executive members of longer standing) who wish to learn, renew, or hone their skills. Members-at-Large are welcome to attend, provided the prerequisite is met. All workshop attendees will be credited for these workshops in our Steward Learning Series Passport program.  Growing our Mobilizing Power;  Understanding Mental Health;  Creating Accommodation Friendly Workplaces;  Conflict Skills for Stewards; and  Preventing Mental Injuries at Work. Pre-requisite: Introduction to Stewarding.

SLS - Growing our mobilizing power
Feb 24, 2025 (9:00am-12:00pm (Saskatchewan))

Stewards can play a key role when the union needs to mobilize our members – whether it’s to support the bargaining committee, or stop the employer’s attempt to contract out our work. Learn basic mobilization theory and explore how stewards can tackle workplace problems in ways that engage more members and build the union’s power.

SLS - Understanding mental health
Feb 24, 2025 (1:00pm-4:00pm (Saskatchewan))

Explore the steward’s role in supporting and representing members dealing with mental health issues. Learn how to challenge stigma, and how to approach a conversation with a member about a possible mental health issue.

SLS - Creating accommodation-friendly workplaces
Feb 25, 2025 (9:00am-12:00pm (Saskatchewan))

Learn the legal framework for the duty to accommodate, what a good accommodation process and plan look like, and what to do if the employer is not willing to provide reasonable accommodation. NOTE: Please bring your Steward Handbook to the workshop.

SLS - Conflict skills for stewards
Feb 25, 2025 (1:00pm-4:00pm (Saskatchewan))

Unresolved workplace conflict is stressful and weakens the union. Learn about the sources of workplace conflict and how to choose a response that fits the situation. Practice conflict communication skills that will help you resolve conflict at work and in the union.

SLS - HS - Preventing Mental Injuries at Work
Feb 26, 2025 (9:00am-11:00am (Saskatchewan))

New forms of work, job insecurity, work intensification, high demands, violence and a resulting poor work-life balance are resulting in psychosocial and mental health problems in CUPE workplaces. This module focuses on the workplace as the cause or a contributor to mental health issues, and not the individual. Discuss strategies and actions that actually help make workplaces psychologically healthier and safer.

In response to the health concerns of our members and staff, CUPE has implemented a Scent-Free Policy at all of our workshops. Scented products such as hair spray, perfume and deodorant can trigger reactions such as respiratory distress and headaches. Facilitators and participants are asked to refrain from using scented products while attending our workshops and meetings. Thank you for your cooperation.
