Montreal, September 18, 2000 - Minister Diane Lemieux and her representatives called upon the MUCPF tactical squad to not only eject but arrest 18 municipal employees (men and women), seven of whom are retired, four of whom are members of the unions Status of Women Committee, two of whom are representatives of ethnic groups, and other demonstrators representing social agencies, who were peacefully occupying the Ministers offices in the hopes of reminding her of her promise last June 19 to meet with them.

The union will not cease its actions to remind the Minister of her promise to meet and discuss their concerns about the current attacks on the right to bargain in the municipal sector, attacks which augur badly for the management of the retired workers pension fund. The union repeats its request to discuss the issue despite the fact that the Minister chose the confrontational route.

The outside and inside workers on the Canadian Union of Public Employees Provincial Municipal Sector Council will, in fact, continue their demonstrations outside the Ministers offices (Sherbrooke and Bossuet) until 6 pm tonight.
