EDMONTON – The Edmonton Garrison Military Family Resource Society has become the first unionized military day care in Canada.
In a vote of 13-6, employees of the society voted to join the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE).
CUPE Alberta President Marle Roberts said the employees joined the union to work for wage parity with other professionals in the field.
“They are accredited child care workers, and they want to be paid as such,” said Roberts.
CUPE represents a large number of child care workers across the country. Roberts said that by joining the union, the employees will be able to access a network of knowledge and skills that will help them in their workplace.
“As the largest union in Canada, CUPE can offer these workers the best research, bargaining, and labour relations assistance they can get,” said Roberts. “They join a large and growing CUPE family.”
