The Labour Relations has rejected a bid by the Health Employers’ Association of B.C. to declare that a June 11 protest at Burnaby Hospital was an illegal strike.

The HEABC had sought an LRB order that would have made similar protests by the HEU illegal for the next two years.

The protesters’ goal was to draw attention to the threatened closure of Burnaby Hospital, which could be the first urban casualty of Gordon Campbell’s reckless agenda of health care cuts.

And HEU Burnaby Local members were also angered by recent small-scale privatization moves at their facility that will cost the Fraser Health Authority more than providing the services in-house.

The protesters were joined by members of other unions and community activists.
