ARNPRIOR, ON – Rather than come to an agreement with the union, the Town of Arnprior has chosen to hold a supervised vote with its employees – a vote that was rejected by 77 per cent of CUPE 4960 members – an unprecedented move that may lead to a labour dispute for the small community.

The bargaining process began late in 2009 and now over two years later, workers are still without a contract – the union has been nothing but accommodating throughout this process and we are very disappointed with the path the employer has chosen to take,” said Dan Pike, CUPE National Representative.

When negotiations first began, elected members of council actively participated in bargaining. However, following a change in Council, the Town of Arnprior has taken a new direction with the hiring of outside consultants. The Town of Arnprior is still without a CAO which makes it difficult for the union to know who is in charge but it appears these consultants are leading negotiations on the employer’s behalf.

Council has decided they do not want to participate in bargaining anymore. As a result, negotiations are being dictated and lead by outside counsel. We are asking Town Council to get involved in order to prevent a work stoppage.” added Pike.

The Town of Arnprior has threatened a lockout for April 15. Significant concessions are being tabled by the employer, such as changes to benefits, hours of work, and standby pay.

The Town of Arnprior has put CUPE 4960 members in a tough position and they need to realize that these employees work tirelessly to provide quality services to the community of Arnprior,” added CUPE 4960 President Dan Hebert. “It’s time the Town of Arnprior treat its workers with respect and fairness and give them the settlement they deserve,” he concluded.

CUPE 4960 represents workers in the Town of Arnprior that provide services to the municipality in recreation, public works and water.
