Local 767 merging with Local 416

CUPE Local 416, the Toronto Civic Employees Union, has 300 new members. Local 767, which had represented employees of the Metro Toronto Housing Association for many years, has voted to merge with Local 416.

The merger was sparked by the Harris governments downloading of social housing to municipalities as of January 1, 2001.

The City of Toronto now owns two housing companies. Its believed the city will merge the two companies into one.

With a 10,000-member strong local union behind them now, the new Local 416 Housing Unit will be well positioned to tackle upcoming issues and concerns.
