One of CUPEs largest municipal locals has just won wage increases of 5%, 2% and 2% in a three-year deal with the Toronto Harbour Commission.

The deal comes as CUPE 416 is in the midst of bargaining with the City of Toronto for a new contract on behalf of close to 10,000 members.

The so-called Megacity was rammed through by the Harris government in January 1998. Local 416 now represents outside workers, ambulance workers, library workers and others in the six former municipalities which used to part of the old Metro Toronto.

Harmonization of wages is expected to be a central issue in the contract talks between Local 416 and the City of Toronto, as well as a wage increase, job security language and fighting any concessions.
